Few writers have provided more thoughtful insight on running than Running 101 author Joe Henderson. A respected voice on the subject since the 1960s, he now distills the wisdom of his years into 101 practical lessons that are ideal for beginning and intermediate runners looking for new ways to improve and enjoy the sport. Henderson's wealth of experience is evident on every page as he covers the nuts-and-bolts basics of the sport he knows as few others do. Throughout the book's 15 informative and entertaining chapters, he teaches you how to: set and meet realistic goals, plan your training and racing season, evaluate and track your progress, choose appropriate shoes and running gear, avoid and recover from injury, eat for training and racing, return after time off, run faster and longer, follow a training program for the 5K to marathon, and recover smarter and faster from hard training and racing. Whether you're lacing up your running shoes for the first time, coming back after an injury, or training to run a longer distance than ever before, the fundamentals in Running 101 make it the one course you won't want to miss. About the Author Joe Henderson combined his passion for running with his natural talent for writing and became one of the most prolific running writers on the planet. Although Henderson never accomplished his first career goal of becoming a high school or college running coach, through his advice in hundreds of magazines and books and in frequent speeches to running groups, he has indirectly coached thousands of runners. Henderson was born in Illinois in 1943 and grew up in Iowa, where he began running at age 14. After graduating from Drake University, he began his work in running journalism at Track & Field News. Today he continues as a columnist with Runner's World and as the publisher of the newsletter Running Commentary. He has authored and coauthored 22 books including the best-selling Marathon Training as well as four others from Human Kinetics N Best Runs, Better Runs, Coaching Cross Country Successfully, and Fitness Running. Henderson has twice been named Journalist of the Year by the Road Runners Club of America. He is also a member of the Club's Hall of Fame. Henderson now lives in Eugene, Oregon, with his wife, Barbara Shaw. Table of Contents Part I: Starting to Run Chapter 1. Setting Goals Chapter 2. Choosing Gear Chapter 3. Making Plans Chapter 4.
